I have a old Military trunk sent home by a solider . It has no zip code and I have a hard time reading price on stamps they may say 11 cents ? Any info to ID year of trunk and also it came with some Marine clothes so was he a Marine . I know you military guys can get clues off it for me :-) Thanks for any info . I have had it about 20 years and use to store things in .
It is made of plywood and has a top shelf that comes out to put things under it inside .

Also known as a foot locker. I still have my dads from the mid 50's, a little different on the handles but does have the inside pull-out compartment. If you can give me close up shot of the stamps I can tell you when they were issued to narrow down the date. It does look like a WWII era.
Hi Mustang I can't move trunk to better light it is to heavy . I took a look with magnifying glass and flashlight to see it better , a few are Woodruff 1 dollar and 2 are Lincoln 15 cents
I looked up woodruff stamp and it says On August 29, 1938, the Post Office issued the 1 dollar presidential issue. The engraved image of Wilson was modeled after a medal struck by George Morgan of the US Mint. It looks like stamp on trunk . Does that help :-)
Yes, your description will be sufficient. Let me dig out my stamp catalog. Sounds like both stamps are from the Presidential Series, I will be able to give you the timespan these were used. First issued in 1938, stamps were issued for several years after. Will advise on next comment.
Manikin - need better description of the Lincoln stamps
# 1 - What color are they - they look green in the picture if they are the ones on the bottom - # 2 - How do you know it is Lincoln - is his picture clear enough for you to distinguish or does it say "A. Lincoln" on top like his signature?
# 3 - Are you sure it is 2 cents if it is Lincoln? I show no 2 cent issues for Lincoln.
Here is some more info - The US Post Office implemente postal zones for large cities in 1943 (for example - your Milwaukee 16 - 16 is the postal zone). The 5-digit zip codes were initiated in 1963 so we've narrowed it down so far into the 20 year time span of 1943-1963.

Thank you ROBin :-) I wish they had listed parents name it for sure make it him if the Dad was H. Sweed . How interesting and if he was jewish did his family flee to USA after WWII or before ? So many questions about a soldier and I wonder why no mention he was a Vet in obit ? Good work by you and Mustang . Thank you both so much !!!!!!!!!!!!
Somewhat of a coincidence his sister is from Michigan City, In. - I lived there from 1971-1981 and then again 2005-2011. Just moved to Florida last year.

Did you by chance know her ? that would be a big stretch to think that :-) It is intriguing to find find a old foot locker and wanting to know the history of it and the man that it belonged to. I am still wondering why no mention in that obit he was a veteran . I know we got it at a auction years ago in Milwaukee .

I have a footlocker identical to this that was used in the Vietnam War. It's a pretty standard item but the names found on these vintage pieces really personalize them.
mrmaj I love to know this was a Nam trunk . You know I was a Nam Nurse and have a very special place in my heart for Vietnam Vets . I marked solved but I wish I could track him by his what I guess is his ss # on trunk ? Thanks for the info . I could only hope it was from that time period :-)
Corporal Allen J Sweed was born 19 June 1931 he was drafted into the Army on
Jan 1, 1951 and was assigned to Korea with the Hq. Co. 366 Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was discharged on Jan 1, 1953. A draftee only has to serve two years of active military service. APO 970 was assigned to Taegu, Korea.

Corporal Sweed with his service number of 55240999 was drafted from the State of Wisconsin. US stands for draftee, RA is for regular Army, NG for National Guard, AR for Army Reserve.

ttom Thank you Thank you :-) I knew this man could be traced but without your help would never have found him and his history . Amazing to learn so much about the trunk . I appreciate all the time you put in to this ttom . I am a history buff ,I like to find any provenance on my collections when I can to keep with them as they pass through time and the history of it is lost . :-)
Manikin, I have my dad's foot locker posted on my show and tell. I do have a written history inside the locker for my daughter and someday it will pass down to my grandson.
