THIS IS AN UGLY TALE, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED TO ALL OF US WHO BUY FROM PHOTOGRAPHS ON INTERNET:
1. THE VASE AS OFFERED. NOTICE THAT THE PHOTOGRAPH IS TAKEN AGAINST A CLOTH BACKDROP. THE DEALER'S DESCRIPTION:
This is a Loetz Spiraloptisch iridescent vase. Go to Loetz.com and click 1905. There a picture of it there. The embossed design really highlights the iridescent finish. The bottom has been ground smooth. It stands 3 3/4" high and is 2 1/2" in diameter. There is no damage to the piece. The iridescent finish on the inside of the vase has a separation line. This piece has a lot of bling for its size.
SO, I HIT THE BIN BUTTON.
2. THE BOX ARRIVED BADLY BANGED ON ONE SIDE. WEN I UNWRAPPED, I WAS QUITE SURPRISED. THE VASE CAME IN A SINGLE LAYER OF BUBBLE GLASS, WITH A HANDFUL OF PACKING POPCORN, IN THE CONDITION SHOWN IN THE SECOND PICTURE. THE LINE WENT AROUND THE VASE, AFFECTING 75% OF ITS SURFACE. I KNEW I HAD BEEN SWINDLED. IT WAS CLEAR WHY IT HAD BEEN CARELESSLY PACKED. IT WAS CLEAR THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION WAS FRAUDULENT, SINCE THERE WAS NO PICTURE OF THE "SEPARATION LINE".
SO, I WROTE THE SELLER, SUGGESTING A PARTIAL REFUND AND NOTIFYING HIM OF THE DAMAGE. AND HERE IS IS HIS CYNICAL RESPONSE:
Please return the item if you are not satisfied. I will refund the full amount. The line you see is a manufacturing irregular-ity, a separation of the glaze on the inside of the piece and is not on the outside. The fact Loetz did not destroy the piece suggests it is within the acceptable range of irregularities. That being said, I will immediately refund the transaction upon receipt.
TWO THINGS WORTH POINTING OUT: HE KNEW ABOUT THE DEFECT, AND HE DID NOT DISCLOSE IT--- HENCE THE CLOTH BACKDROP. SECOND, HE WOULD REFUND ONLY AFTER HE HAD RECEIVED IT. I WOULD NOT SEND THE VASE BACK. HE WOULD TRY TO HAWK AGAIN. I CAN LIVE WITH DAMAGED PIECES. INSTEAD, I GAVE HIM AN F- FOR FULL FRAUD. HE, OF COURSE, DOES NOT KNOW MY CONNECTION TO LOETZ.COM. NOW I'LL LET HIM KNOW . . .
MORAL OF THE STORY: BEST BUY IRIDESCENT GLASS THAT IS PHOTOGRAPHED WITH LIGHT SHINING THROUGH. IRIDESCENT SURFACES MASK IMPERFECTIONS.
