I have recently aquired this very nice pen wipe made by Sampson Mordan & Co. in London (Leopards Head hallmark), England. Dated and fully hallmarked (C) for 1898, in good condition with articulating handles on the side and mounted on a wooden plinth. Used for cleaning the nibs of dip pens so that excess ink can be wiped off before it drips on the document or drawing. It is modelled after a "boot scraper" that would have been positioned outside of any self respecting Victorian Country Estate front door.
It measures approx. 55mm x 55mm square on the base and is 25mm high. It weighs 42 grams. I did lust after it's "bigger brother" at 60 grams but the Antiques Shop wanted £550 ($880) which I thought was a bit "steep" at the time! :(
