Not my usual sort of thing, but something we have had in the family for years, a large and VERY heavy brass planter. Made of very thick brass, standing on three legs, with ornate (Japanese?) decoration. I can not quite see how they have managed to etch/emboss? the decoration because the brass is so thick, and no embossing on the inside. I have no idea of the age, where it came from or who made it, but it looks great!

Could the decoration be applied like the handles?

Hi mrmajestic1, thanks for looking. I did wonder about that but it appears so old and well polished that it is impossible to see. Some of the design, like the trees almost look carved out of the brass. Maybe molten brass was poured into a mold, and then the detail worked in afterwards. They seem to have gone to a lot of trouble to make something to put a plant in!

This is most beautiful, Petey. It looks Japanese to me, too, but I am certainly not learned in Japanese art!!! Hopefully, ROBinHawaii or one of the others who know something about Oriental art will see this. If there are any markings on the bottom, it might help them - also, perhaps dimensions. So glad that you have this!

petey, I gotta say it, nobody else has, It fits your collection, just needs to be labeled has a "Home-Made" debris deflector. Instuction are as follows: "Dump any contains and grab a tea-towel, turn over and tie on head." sorry, but thought I spread a little humor. Lovely Piece and it has Family history, should have not made light of it . Thanks for sharing. Best Regards, Kery

Hi petey, this is, from the motif around the rim, Chinese. It is a lost wax casting and the design and handles were cast intergral with the bowl. If you will click on my username, then click on 'see all 30' and go down to 6 months, you will find a similar casting made by the same process. Is there a mark on the bottom?

kerry10456, like your sense of humour, nothing would get through the thickness of the brass, on the downside, the wearer would end up about 2 feet shorter due to the weight of it!

I recently did a lot of research on oriental bronze works, and this appears to have been cast in a Chinese motif(tripod formation with tapered legs, distinct rim at the top). Design was used extensively during Ming Dynasty and after. Also the piece may actually be bronze instead of brass...color of the bronzes differed depending on actual proportion of copper used in mix. Piece is probably not that old(maybe late 1800's) Ming pieces would have makers matk cast into the bottom. Still, a really nice piece!
