The inside is inscribed w/ viernes 4to de julio, 1952 [friday - 4th of july, 1952]. it is full of these little paper envelopes for gifts of pesos. i sure wish there was some way to repair it!

Color photocopy the other side make a piece of wood that fits and paste the paper copy on it to match. We won't tell!
Great idea, trunkman! Ho2cultcha, you might also ask stefdesign if she knows anyone who would be able to paint an exact duplicate on a freshly cut new panel. If you have water issues, you might mention that to her, too. It's just too beautiful a box to be left in its current state - unless perhaps you used it as a planter box....
that is a great idea trunkman. i think i'll try it. i can get a digitized copy and adjust it as necessary to fit the size and picture.
