This is a South African made British steel helmet from WW11. These helmets had a felt pad inside the top, and three seperate holes in the rim to attach a cloth to cover the neck in the sun. I was on holiday in Malta at the time, when some renovations were being done on an old house in Valletta. Someone was bringing out the contents found inside when I spotted this, made an offer and bought it. This is a real been there helmet, normally used by the army, but this one painted red to denote fire/rescue. The heat in Malta obviously affected the paint giving it a dried out cracked appearance.
