Being a Paramedic and U.S. Coast Guard Corpsman myself I truly enjoy the history of my service (Emergency Medical Services). This “Ambulance Box” was given to me by my father-in-law, he was a picker himself and gave this as a gift after he bought it from a swap meet. He too was a Corpsman from the Navy then went to seminary school and became a Chaplin for the USN until his retirement as a LCDR. The unfortunate part is that he too was unsure of it's real history. I am trying to find out how old this item is and if this was used during the war (WWI, WWII, etc…) as a medic or corpsman item or as a civilian EMS item. Any information would be awesome to have so I do not need to shrug my shoulders when visitors come to my house and ask: when , where, how long ago?

I have this same box and have wondered what it was used for. On the inside lid there is a list of what the contents were in the box. It also has a place for the name of the owner of the box on the label but it is not filled out. I can see on the side of the box there is some sort of an emblem stamped into the metal and some other writing stamped into the metal but cannot make out what it says.
Hello Jim, Well above the caduceus is the words "MED DEPT USA", I just noticed a faded imprint ot the medal so I took a paper and pencil and rubbed the following: "PATENTED" with the following dates below: JULY 11 1905, NOV. 7 -05, APRIL 7 -06, NOV. 9 -09, MAY 31 -10.
You stated there was a list on the lid, could you please tell me that list so I can stock it with the approprate supplies from the past.
