I am looking for some info. about this chair I have in my collection. Thanks for the help!

I found this chair at a second hand store about a year ago, it was the only one of this kind. I am wondering what everyone think about the age, style, condition, etc.

This particular chair intrigues me because of the markings underneath the seat (no pictured above). I recall being unable to read the markings, so I took a piece of paper and a crayon and made some light rubbings to see what would happen. I ended up with some Old English/Gothic style letters that were very different. I was not understand them however. Something about the simplicity of this chair is very charming.

A very beautiful chair! Very fine woodwork here! I'll leave the dating to others more knowledgeable than I.

Perhaps you could take a photo of the markings? I can sometimes capture a good image with my camera of an item I can't read with a magnifying glass.

I will def. do so. Thanks again! To me it looks like the front legs and stretchers are from a different chair. Almost like they were used to preserve the back portion of the chair because the craftsmanship was so beautiful. The front end of the chair just doesn't look natural to me.

Hi. I see that one of the stretchers (Right) is missing, so perhaps someone did have to work on this chair a bit. As for the front stretchers, if they're replacements, they've done an excellent job because the 'ring' motif is the same motif as appears on the legs. Perhaps you should examine the joins of front stretchers and chair legs. If I were told that one of the stretchers had been replaced, and was being quizzed on what one, my hypothesis would be the back stretcher, because it's plain. I'm very ignorant of furniture, however, and am just here emphasizing that the front stretchers look authentic to me.

What strikes me as different about this chair is the curve in lines that are almost always straight. It's wondeful!

Hi, blunderbuss2! That's good to hear. Never heard of an 'Appalachian chair', though I love Appalachia. I learn something new on this site just about every time I log onto it. Take care, gentlemen!
