On July 21, 1896 George B. Adams was granted US Patent No. 564,356. He was an assignor to the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, NJ.
Whitehead & Hoag Company produced several advertising items including celluloid buttons and pins. I've come across tons of W & H Co. buttons and pins with all sorts of advertising on them. But pictured here are a few of which turned up having a corkscrew attached, instead of a pin needle. How cool is that?!
Now, this patent was pertaining to the connection of a button or badge to the bar or pin needle. There’s no mention anywhere of a corkscrew in the patent, but who cares! The fact is that Whitehead & Hoag produced at least 3 different buttons with corkscrews that I’m aware of.
