I saw this bank and loved it ! I don't know much about it , but I think it is pretty neat ! I pull it out every Forth of July.

I know very little about these, but I know there are repoductions , made of cast also. I have found that the quality of the casting and the type of screws used will tell you original from repoduction pieces on cast toys. BTW there is a plastic version of these that was marketed and sold in 1976 for the Bi-Centennial. I have one of those and the box. It doesn't work as well as the cast versions, but I thought it was neat. Thanks for sharing yours.

The originals were patented in the 1860's and can bring a tidy sum. Another thing to look for in any cast item is the bottom grinding. Rotary grinding is obvious and tells you a story. Originals were made before rotary grinders and were hand filed. Slag was quite often just chipped off leaving a flaw. Cast is fun to collect. Believe it or not I saw one of these banks sell for $4100.
I have one of these in cast metal but I don't know much about it either. I believe mine is a reproduction.

wow, i just saw one of these at our local antique market, i've seen them before on antique's roadshow.. they had the uncle same one, and one that was a bear, and another one that i will now have to go back and check out!! but they were all $30.. i wonder if the seller knows something i must not, concidering the prices... what do you all think?? what else could i look for that would tell me if it's a repro or not? like what do the original screws look like?
