This is my contribution to the Radial Engine race, which was the prop which was with a secondary item, which I posted a pic of from Mr. Colwills 3rd book.
It shows the item in rather very dirty condition but it is a good piece and complete. I have ordered a base which I hope will fit the piece and hold it down properly and if not I will have to get one built.
The 3rd illustration is from Mascots Catalogs by Robert Ames, which is also one of my favourite books I got from Robert Colwill who wrote 5 books on mascots which I love as well.
This was item number 6 at the auction I first got around 20 hood ornament pieces or lots. Probably one of my favourites.

Phil, you are a fanatic supreme. How many of these bloody things do you have? You never post how you display them, so how about it?
I seem to do what I have to do, which is find room for them. Right now on a big table and some in storage, but that will be changing.
As an A&P I really love the eng. avec prop. Is it a radial or rotary eng.? On a rotary, the prop was mounted stationary on the eng. & the whole eng. turned while on a radial the prop. turned.

Thanks. They are known and called radial engines, usually that would have been in the ads also from what I know and understand. Several different companies made them also, from what I have seen so far. Phil.
People who don't know call all "round-motors" radials but there is a marked difference. Does just the prop. turn separately as I would imagine as it would be easier to manufacture than a rotary. The configuration just looks rotary to me but don't worry about it as it is stylized anyway. I'm just curious but getting to technical I can tell.
Things such as these "evolve" in the dictionary daily and now are in the radial engine catagory. Nowadays you have to realize this, and see it happen, as many things have lost their meaning and taken on new ones.
There aren't many people that know the difference between the two styles of motors, & in this case it doesn't matter as it is just an artistic representation.
Made a big difference if you had to try & fly a rotary engine, they acted as a big gyroscope that made the plane controls difficult to master.

Ah, walksoftly, U know your merde. But they could turn on a dime! Problem was that dead-man throttle because the fuel mix had to go thru the crankcase instead of like a carb..
Been an A&P since '67 & never worked on 1 but knew a few who had flown them. Well no reason to get into something that interested people can google-up.

I promise you I have more at my end thinking the same thing. Some of them even let me work on their planes! I can't fly with them though as I promised my mother that I would never fly in anything I worked on, - and she was a wise woman.
I thought the tech always had to fly after the repairs, or is that just a story, or Canadian?

P.S. It is common for the tech to fly on the test flights after major repairs & I do.
Do you then tell them you're the only tech on the island?
I've fixed lot's of things over the years (never planes) & it's always good to shock the customer once in awhile. Pretend to throw small parts over your shoulder, while muttering that you can't deal with the small stuff.
Too funny David, I think you got ambushed by the creek there, and you know what, all I'm thinkin is : " Give the poor object a chance its only a hood ornament - its not rocket science !! It doesn't have to be a real engine or fly ..."
I AM the only one at the french airport licensed to keep up U.S. registered aircraft & they all know it. Virtually all the planes based there are U.S. registered. This is a sideline as I'm retired from something but can't remember what it was.
I have been known to hand a pilot a bag of scrap parts & tell them they were left over & if they can find where they go, to call me. They don't all appreciate my humour.
