I bought this watch fob the other day and once I left the dimly lit store I noticed the strange shield marking. It doesn't appear to be engraved.

Does anyone have an idea how it got on there, and possibly what it represents?

I added a photo of the cameo on the reverse side of the swivel because its gorgeous.

Thanks Jason, my only hesitation is that the shield is really on the same plane as the surroundings, not at all raised or depressed. Is the difference between the gloss and the matte enough to produce the image with ink?

      Amazing, thanks so much!
I wasn't able to find anything like it on google, have you seen any other examples of this? or an envelope stamped with it?

Interesting article on the "old style" auctions-- times sure have changed. I miss those old paper catalogues and small time pre- internet auctions!
