While visiting my son in Springfield, Mo. in 1994, as he was in college, I was privileged to hear Dale Freeman, the very humorous author of this non-book / dictionary, speak, and never laughed so much in my life.
He wrote his first non-book Part I, on Ozarks' dialect in 1961. His second non-book, this one, followed 29 years later.
He was inducted in to the Writers Hall of Fame in 2004 as former Springfield, MO. News-Leader managing editor.
A Navy veteran of WWII, he spent time on both coasts as editing Navy newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area and the administrative assistant to Missouri Congressman Charlie Brown in Washington, D.C. before settling down in the Ozarks in 1960.
In his Ford* (forward) he states: "Despite what some native critics claim, my aim has never been to ridicule or poke fun at the Ozarkers. Heavens! I are one! I'm not laughing at them. I'm smiling with them as we continue our bittersweet struggle to prevent a lovely language and culture from slipping further into the past".
Being a pocket watch collector, I am partial to the -W- section (plate #4 above) to the word:
WAND - You Wand your watch

I live here now, from Bolivar, Fair play, Bear Creek, Stockton, Dunnegan area, The east fence line was the Cedar-Polk county line. Ain't no city boy
And damn sure no Yankee!!!!!!!!!!!
There's a story about the area I lived in, like everywhere, Urban Ledgends. A Union pay shipment was Hi-Jacked and the Patron of the South, hid out inside of "Cave Springs". They were surrounded and two of the three came out and were shot upon exiting. The third and the gold coins were never recovered. Got a wet-suit and under water metal detector.
Since the Washington Nationals & Saint Louis Cardinals are playing game 1 of the NLDS right now, this is a fitting word in this dictionary:
PEECHER - At one time he was a peecher for the Sant Louis Carrdinals.
