Another terrible photo from miKKo! Very dark day for photos....

Charming vintage-style cobalt carnival glass candy container. I think that it's probably newer production; I don't think that they made carnival glass candy containers 'in the old days'. Any opinions on the age and makers of this item appreciated. Is this a Frenchie (French Bulldog) or a Boston Terrier, or a mix of both? Would be delighted to hear any opinion on the breed here depicted. About the size of a large Sunkist orange. Woof woof!

Is the pedestal base part of the candy container?
  3. TallCakes TallCakes, 9 months ago
I think the "B in Diamond" that appears to be part of the collar is actually the makers mark of Boyd Glass; that mark was used 1978-83

Thank you very much, Manikin, inky, mustangtony, and Tall Cakes!!! : )
He's even nicer in person - nice mold work.

No, Tony, I used the pedestal to take the container closer to the light. It's very dark here, and I couldn't capture the dog's likeness without the pedestal. It would look nice on a pedestal. I have some figural candy containers on boxes that I'll post soon.

Thanks much, TallCakes! That's great to learn. I don't know much about Boyd Glass at all - I have encountered so far only their milk glass and opaque glass reproductions. I didn't think that this dog was very old because it's carnival. Do you know who made the original mold? Was it Boyd? It's a very nice mold. Many thanks for your generous assistance. You are a great asset to the CW community, sir. : )

I think this is a Boyd original mold; they have made many different animal in glass over the years. Looking closer at the mark on your piece is may actually be 1988-93; you can check the marks at the Boyd website. They have one of these in honey now.

I think thats a Boston Terrier. The French Bulldog is very similar but has a more smushed-in snout.

Thank you very much, mrmajestic1 and walksoftly!! Good to see you, gentlemen. : )

Thanks much for your input on the dog breed, Tony! I couldn't figure it out. Thanks to Tall Cake's excellent link, I've discovered that Boyd's Crystal Art Glass refers to this item as "Bull Dog's Head". I take it that they mean a Frenchie. It doesn't quite look like a Frenchie, and it doesn't look like a Winston bull either; however, it is a delightful dog 'species'. Here's a link to the page with the Bull Dog's Head:

Thanks very much, Tall Cakes, for sharing your knowledge so generously and for the super links!! It's hard for me to see the Boyd mark clearly, but I think that it looks closer to Boyd's first 'five-years' hallmark (1978-1983). I don't think that it's the fourth five-years hallmark (1993-1998). Reason: because although it looks like there's a vertical line to one side of the "B" on the dog's collar, this line is not contiguous with the header and footer line of the cartouche, and, according to the Boyd images, it should be contiguous if its fourth-five. I note in closing two caveats: 1.) I haven't seen photos of this fourth-five mark, and the actual hallmark might be slightly different from the drawn image. 2.) This laptop doesn't have great resolution, so I think that you can probably see the hallmarks better than I can. Thanks again!!

The Boston Terrier is actually a cross-breed between a English Bulldog and an English Terrier. The French Bulldog has the same features (stand-up ears) except the length of snout and the eyes are set further back in the skull. The pure English Bulldog breed has the floppy lay-down ears. The French Bulldog actually first appeared in England around the turn of the 20th century but the French claim it as one of their old native breeds.

Thank you very much for this information, Tony! I never knew that. My dad grew up with two Boston Terriers, but other than the fact that they're adorable and most winsome fellows, I know nothing about them at all. Never heard that the Frenchie first appeared in England around the turn on the 20th century. Oh my!...All these dogs are delightful. Thanks again! : )

Quick Question, do these pieces come with the stand or did you add those?
  23. miKKoChristmas11 miKKoChristmas11, 8 months ago
Hi, Shawnl86! I added the stand. It's an old Russian stand for wooden eggs - upturned. I don't have portable photographic lights and used this stand to elevate the item to get it closer to the light source. If you want a stand just like this, you can find one very inexpensively on eBay. Thanks for your interest! : )
