Hi Ralph; how big is the purse and is it hinged? If it is about an inch and a bit in length and hinged so it opens; I surmise that the "purse" is for holding postage stamps. These "stamp holders" in precious metals were mainly made in the late Victorian era (After Sir Rowland Hill "invented" the postage stamp). However, this particular ensemble looks a little more modern to me.
