Here is the fifth part of the "Restoration Series" on this, our 1959 British Daimler Ferret Scout Car. The military vehicles are the "centre" of our family Military Collection. This is the Mk2/3 variant.
Photo .1: Apologies for the low flying jeans! These things happen! Using an "A" Frame, block'n'tackle and a fair amount of "elbow grease" the Ferrets's turret is hoisted off. One bolt in the turret ring had been missed and once this was eventually found the task went smoothly!
Photo .2: The turret is removed. The ferret is now open to the elements but the projected English Weather forcasts are unusually good! So no worries! The turret and all it's ancilliary gear is being renovated and restored, along with the Browning Machine Gun, in one of the machine shops at home.
Photo .3: The armour plates on the floor had been removed earlier (see previous CW post). This shows clearly what was underneath.
This is the Drivers station he (obviously) sits behind this steering wheel (Note the odd bottom forward attitude of the wheel..... a most unusual driving experience I can assure you!) The drivers seat and other comforts have all been ripped out, and kept for restoration or replacement items sought. A lot of the ancillary and even fitted equipment had "gone walk-about*" and will need sourcing and buying, however; you will note a full rack of loaded sub-machine gun magazines that were left in the Ferret! (They had been obscured by junk and rubbish)
*Been stripped off and stolen whilst stood in the armoured vehicle disposal compound.
Photo .4: As mentioned under Photo .2....the turret was taken off as the weather forcast was fine and no rain...........we get hit by snowstorms!
A halt in the Restoration Project is called, and it is temporarily shut down. (More to come in Part .6: When the weather improves!)
