Hi, Greatsnowy. What is the significance of the Cross of Lorraine on this piece, please? Is it meant to convey a military or 'resistance' sense? Have you seen this cross on other Galle works? Thanks!

I believe it is. the thistle was from the city's coat of arms, to symbolize defense. "He who touches, feels the thorn" The cross of lorraine was symbolic of the town. I think this vase would have been early 1890's late 1880's and I believe (but my history is sketchy for this part of the world in the 1890's) that France was starting things up with quite a few other countries in this time period.

Just a minor correction a more literal translation (can't do the french) is 'those who touch it and will get hurt' -date about right maybe a tad later. At that time half of Lorraine and all of Alsace was 'occupied' by Germany. Nancy used to be miles fram the French - German border but at the that time was acting as a bordertown and military garrison.

A stunning and utterly classic 1st period Galle! Sweet!

Non inultus premor! The motto and the thistle (le chardon lorrain) crops up in the most unexpected places on Gallé's ceramics, glass and furniture. This is a beautiful example! The Latin motto was created in the fifteenth century by René d'Anjou and the French versions by René II de Lorraine « Ne toquès mi, je poins » (« Ne me touche pas, je pique ») « Qui s'y frotte, s'y pique ». As manddmoir points out in the time of Gallé the French or German question changed frequently. Bismarck only annexed about a third of today's Lorraine to the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian War. I recently saw a programme where J K Rowling discovered that her relations she thought were French were born French, then German and finally French again.

GSO, Quittenbaum has a Galle vase in this shape in their upcoming Nov. auction. Saw it last night when I was looking over their auction catalog...you might be interested to see it for comparison with your example. I think their pre-sale estimate will make you happy.

well the value is right about what I was thinking I was going to sell it for when I sell it. (but i was thinking 1000-1200 usd not Euros) But I am not sure that piece in Quittenbaum is apples to apples. It's the same shape but the color of the glass is different and the subject matter is different. Not sure If I'd be thinking of an adjustment up or down based on the amber glass to clear or based on any of the decoration. I think subject matter really counts with Galle Enameled. but I don't know if all flora is roughly equal and it's only changed when you bring in various Fauna as well vs just flora.

I agree. Your example is far better. The cross of Lorraine is the clincher.
