After WW1, the steel helmet press captured from the Germans was taken to the Vickers Armstrong factory in th UK, where is was used to produce helmets for the Irish Forces, and possibly for other countries? This helmet is one of those produced. Most of these helmets were later buried in landfill sites by the Irish army when they became obsolete. This is one of the few which survived, and is in better condition than most as it was re-issued several times, and then stored in a safe place when it was decommissioned. It has owner ID in it, written on the liner, worthy of a bit of research, I think, when I have more time. The liner is made by T Smith and Son Dublin, 1927.

Wow, that is fascinating - I understand that the press would have resulted in the same shell, but it looks like the "guts" of the helmet were simply copied as well.
It appears that the chin strap attachment was carried over from the German 1916 helmet, which was interchangable with the pickelhaube, which would have been of no utility to the Irish (and was dropped from the later German 1918 helmet). Even the Dublin manufactured liner looks German inspired.
I wonder how the Irish WWI veterans felt wearing it.

Chrisnp, yes it does seem to be an exact copy of the early German WW1 steel helmet, with the addition of a bracket on the front for a badge. Unusual thing about this helmet is that they were usually painted green (army) or white (civil defence). This one came out of the factory painted blue (airforce?), later painted white for civil defence colour, and then back to original blue.
