Greatsnowy…
(121 items)

I just got this fantastic piece. I am thinking maybe Josephinenhuette..
It's three layers clear purple and white. the scene is three women by the sea with a large stake behind the central one. there is a woman in black behind them on the left who appears to be praying. probably signifying mourning. the girl on the right looks like a peasant. maybe she's the central woman's maid or servant and the woman in the middle looks as if she's supposed to be the focus of the image. There is a giant hook or anchor in front of them. I am just not sure what they are supposed to be harkening to. the best I can think of is the tale of Andromeda and the pissed off gods but andromeda was chained naked to a rock so it doesn't quite fit.

Anyone have any ideas as to what this story is supposed to be telling? is it a parable or something?

as to the glass itself. It's very high quality. I am guessing 1850-1870. If anyone has opinions on any aspect of this piece I'd love to hear them.

I think you right on about the mourning aspect. These sorts of scenes were popular during the early to mid-19th century as women would be left at home to care for the children when their husbands went out to sea. I've seen this sort of motif on all sorts of objects, from pocket watch cases to scrimshaw. I don't think there's a classical allusion here.

if that's the case what does that wooden stake behind her signify. it really looks like she's about to be sacrificed to me.

Is it not at the foot of the cross, after the Deposition?

then what is the giant hook for? :) there are a lot of confusing elements to this picture imho.

ohhhhh, I think that's the bow of a ship and she's holding the anchor. So she's at sea not on the shore.

Either that or she's fishing for giants.

I've been hunting around for the last bit and am seriously impressed with the quality of the painting! Perhaps this is a bit "out there"? But, the anchor suggests "Hope". But then there's the look in the eyes of those two women. The woman on her knees praying suggests "Faith"and I've seen lots of Biedermeier engraved pieces that combine these two ideas. Perhaps it's a Biblical reference?
„Nun aber bleiben Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe, diese drei; aber die Liebe ist die Größte unter ihnen.“ (1. Korintherbrief, Kap. 13, Vers 13.)
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
    Anchors aweigh!

and yeah the quality of this piece is exceptional. It had a buy it now and I was like, BUY.. I didn't even read the description. I was like even if it has problems.. that quality... BUY

A great 'buy now' then despite all of those confusing elements.
    An allegory.
