    This beautiful old Grandfather Clock was given to me by my partner some years ago! It has a lot of carving on it which I have shown some of in three pictures, bears some dragons lower down and has a carved date of 1651, which I think is far too early for this clock (or even if long case clocks were about then?) Do tell if you know! Or maybe the casing has been used prior to this clock is possible, but for what? It works very well when the weights are in (you can just see one on the floor) It has been moved to another position and now needs to be set level before restarting. I think a lovely clock, hope you do too! Just wish it didn't have such a sad face!! LOL

      What a stunningly beautiful Tall Case Clock. The first pendulum clock was developed in 1656 by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens so your clock's date has some other significance. Perhaps it was a date that was important in the specific provenance of the clock. This must be a handmade clock. It looks like a signed dial. What are the name(s) on the face above the 12? By the way, that's not a sad face on your clock. It's a distinguished mustache on this expressionless Sentinel's face. :{

      Thank you Bruce99 and miKKoChristmas for the Love! Now Bruce99, the name on the clock is John Halifax and Barnsley under it (or could be Barnfley) the s or the f in this word look like the 'f' in Halifax, but could also be an 's' (if you can follow that LOL) Also the date could be 1657 as the '1'at the beginning looks different from the '1' at the end if it were 1651. Thank you too for all the information you have so kindly included!

      Evidently John Halifax was an English Clock Maker.

      Here's a link to another one of his clocks:
      http://www.carters.com.au/index.cfm/item/105765-an-oak-quarter-chiming-long-case-clock-john-halifax-london-the-t/

      I would try to research John Halifax to get a better idea of the history for this wonderful clock.

      Good luck.

      Bruce99 - A dear old friend of mine has been chasing up on this clock and this is what he has come up with: From Brittens 'Old Clocks & Watches & their Makers' Sixth Edition 1932 :- John Hallifax, Barsley (Yorkshire) On his tombstone in St. Mary's Churchyard, Barnsley if the following:- In memory of Mr. John Hallifax of this town, whose abilities and virtue few in these times have attained. His art and industry were such that his numerous inventions will be a lasting monument of his merit. He departed this life Sept. 25th 1750.

      A fine long-case by him is a Wentworth House, the seat of Earl Fitzwilliam, His Second son, Thomas, came to London was Lord Mayor of London in 1776, knighted in 1778, sat n Parliament as member for Aylesbury in 1784 and died in 1789.

      How wonderful is all of this information about 'a clock'!! Marvelous! I do hope this is of interest to you, and thank you for your time and effort on my part!!

      It's just a wonderful piece of art. Inside and out. Certainly a piece worthy of any museum. Thanks for sharing it with us!

      Thank you Bruce99 for showing such an interest in this clock! It was bequeathed to my partner by a relative. He, already having a long case clock , gave it to me! I could be wrong, but maybe he gave away the wrong one!!! But I love it too and it may be some time before it gets to the museum. Sorry for the spelling mistakes above, I have a sticky keypad (must be the wine I spill on it!! Lol!) and was in a rush to let you know what I had found out so did not read it through before posting!!

      I dare say that it sounds like both the clock and your partner are keepers! :)
