I received this item from a friend of mine, neither one of us have any idea what it is. I was hoping someone here can help.
It seems to be a brass container; the top has a lid on hinges. It is 3" tall and 2 1/2" wide. Both sides have fasteners that have what's left of a leather strap. Both the front and back have an engraved/etched design.

I can't wait to find out out what this is! I love things like this. Are there any markings/numbers/letters on it anywhere??
match safe?
I can't locate any numbers/markings/letters on it. The inside is dirty; like soot. Could it have been used as an ashtray or a friend of mine thought gunpowder.
That info about the dirty inside is helpful! Check out some Ottoman or Persian gunpowder holders on google! Here's one I found that is similar:

You may find one more like yours if you dig a bit! Hope that helps. :-)
And you'll need to copy and paste the entire link. It's not a clickable link, I'm afraid.
Thank you. I will check them out and get back to you.
