I don't know anything about this piece I'm trying to find out about it. The only information on it is a placard in the front that says JJ Murdock.

It looks to be a machinests tool chest.

Could it be a travel desk?

I think you are correct; it does have all the properties of a machinist tool chest; the drawers are felt-lined with the impressions of various tools and there are handles on the sides. The top is hinged and lifts up but unlike the Gastner models there is no mirror underneath that flip top lid. The wood appears to be cherry or oak. No part of it is scratch board and the center area locks the entire piece.
