This image dates from about 1895- 1910.
The soldier was photographed in Telluride, Colorado.
He wears his uniform and has the addition of a pistol in a gun belt. The weapon was probably the photographers to plus up the "scare factor" on the image.
Telluride has a rich mining history as well as a history of labor disputes. This soldier may have been a state trooper dispatched to the area to help keep the peace.

Even if the pistol belonged to the photographer, it has caught my attention as it has a lanyard-ring on the butt. At 1st, I was thinking .44 S&W Russian but the cartridges are too long. Looks familiar. Help somebody!
The pistol and gun belt was my reason for buying!
