THIS IS THE FINAL SET OF LEYENDECKER'S THANKSGIVING COVERS. HIS FINAL ONE WAS IN 1939. HE CEASED PRODUCING HOLIDAY OR SEASONAL COVERS FOR THE POST. IRONICALLY, HE WAS STILL COVERING THANKSGIVING IN 1948.
nOV. 23, 1935, THE USUAL IRRESISTIBLE COMBINATION: GRANDMOTHERS AND APPLE PIE. IT'S FASCINATING TO NOTICE THAT FOR NOV. OF 1925 (SEE PREVIOUS POST), HE HAD USED A VARIATION ON THIS SAME THEME, IN 1936, HIS THANKSGIVING COVER FEATURED A BLACK CHILD WATCHING HIS MOTHER BASK THE TURKEY (SEE PREVIOUS POST ON BLACKS IN LEYENDECKER COVERS). NOV. 1937 WAS NOT COVERED.
NOV. 26, 1938. ANOTHER REPETITION: A BOY ASLEEP AT THE TABLE RIGHT AFTER THANKSGIVING DINNER.
NOV 25, 1939. lEYENDECKER'S LAST THANKSGIVING COVER. NOTICE THE STUNNING TRANSITION TO A TOTALLY REALISTIC STYLE. COULD IT BY THAT THE ARTIST, JUST AS THE HAPPLESS TURKEY, SENSED HE WAS ABOUT TO BE AXED?
NOV 23, 1948. A RETURN TO THE FOUNDING ALLEGORY FOR AMERICAN WEEKLY. FIRST TIME THAT A FAMILY IS DEPICTED TOGETHER. I LOVE THE FOREFRONT DETAIL OF THE EMBROIDERED RUNNER.
