this item was in a box of sewing items i purchased at a local auction -- i thought perhaps it was a spool threader -- but there is absolutely no way you are able to mount a wooden spool onto the chamber as the round cylinders are machine crimped around the hook -- and why anyone would want to wind just thread around the hook -- to me -- would make no sense -- there was another one listed on ebay a couple of months ago and they had no clue what it might be either -- just that perhaps it was sewing related -- the only marks on it are on the wheel which states -- "made in germany"
i am perplexed and help in identifying this object would be appreciated

I think that's a mechanical winder for making twisted cord - you can buy modern plastic versions, they're a bit like a fishing reel.

you attach the loose ends of doubled thread to a solid point, and loop the folded end on the hook of the winder, then 'reel' it until the cord is firmly twisted and kinks against itself, then tie off and cut the cords away at each end.
you take the turned end to the fixed end, and let it twist itself together, and then tie it off. It's possible to do this by hand but much easier for one person with a winder :)
:) I used one (a modern one) just recently for an embroidery project - so I could see that this was the same type of tool

You're welcome :) it was lucky someone else commented on it this week or I probably wouldn't have found it, I usually only look at the sewing machine posts :)
yes bernadette -- i should have sent it to you and we would not have done all the research with the comments and etc etc -- but at least this one is a done deal and research completed -- have no clue what to with it as it does not work with with my sewing needs --
