this is one of my favorite trunks that we have restored -- it is a 1890s camel back with double locks and hasps -- pics are before and after -- the interior has also been relined as with the other trunks we have posted on this site

owners of the beauties felt they could discourage the railroad attendants from stacking the trunks by going from a flat to a rounded or dome shaped top -- however being the wryly men that they were it failed -- they merely flipped the trunk on it sides and usually scraped off the handles

I am impressed to say the least. I tinker around with my trunks, but your work is truly masterful, not to mention your knowledge on the subject.

thanks trunkman -- after restoring over 50 trunks and many many redos -- one finally learns the tricks of the old trade -- we love restoring them -- some we place back to original condition as near as possible with what is available in supplies on today's market -- others we make over completely to make them more suitable for today's homes and colors the one posted on this site that i call "toady" is an example -- it all depends on the customer's taste and style

i must say if your carpet trunk came into the shop -- i would refuse to touch it other than place on new handles if they were complete goners -- this trunk needs to be left as is for prosperity -- nice find

one of the most unusual we have come across had turtles for the locks -- trunk was manufactured in south carolina -- will search my archives for pics and post it sometime this week

they are fun -- usually takes we put in about 70 hrs worth of fun to do both the inside and outside -- think that is bad -- check out what greg is doing on an old radiant home stove for restoration

kinda makes me want to give it a whorl as i have always loved these types of stoves for home heat

hi blunder -- good to hear from you -- hope you had a great weekend -- have you figured out that crazy alien contraption that has driven us all nuts on cw -- i am not even going to visit that site tonight as i already have my head screwed to the ceiling after coming back from the house and going through the fire salvage items -- makes one dizzy trying to figure out "what is was" before the fire did its thing -- have a great week

      Beautiful trunks

Oh, that was you that had the fire. Caught parts of discussions about it but guess I didn't connect the dots. Been loaded with work & just scanning CW for weeks now without much time to stir things up in my usual manner. Good luck on the clean up & hope you didn't lose much that insurance can't replace.

thanks roket94 -- your's is a beauty also -- the embossed camel type trunks are my favorite trunks -- they take a lot of work but all the effort really pays off -- hoping you will post some pics of yours showing the inside -- have you redone the inside also -- have a great week

hi blunder -- yap that be us with the fire -- hopefully by mid september we will be able to get back into the house -- there was an investigative team at the house all day monday -- the insurance company is going after a cable company -- it was an electrical fire and it appears this is not the first home that this has happened to -- luckily the fire was during the day and not at night as it happened so fast i am sure ted and i would have burned and been trapped inside the house -- as all power ended when the electrical short occurred -- i didn't even have telephone service since the electricity was immediately cut off -- luckily the neighbors saw what was happening and called the fire department as ted and i poured water onto the roof with the front and back garden hose -- 5 minutes more and the whole house would have been toast

so what is keeping you so busy these weeks blunder -- enjoy your day

Trunkman, any idea which type of lock this is on this trunk? I am looking for a key for mine. (same lockset) maybe if I could see the key I would know what to look for, or even better know which brand lock it is.
