This was among my dad's things when I settled his estate (family from Cincinnati area). The year stamped on it (1832) predates our family's immigration in mid 1800s, and I don't know who in our family had it before Dad. I assume from the stamping that it is circa 1832. Not looking to part with it, but if anyone who knows antique axes knows anything, or can give tips on preserving it, I'm all ears. I assume it's a broad axe, for shaping felled trees into beams/boards, due to the slight angle between blade alignment and how the handle would fit.

1832 has been marked for many years on tools made by d. R Barton & co. Probably a hewing ax for squaring logs to timbers

My dad had one of these. A broad axe for hewing timbers (beams) form logs.
