AFTER COLLECTING CZECH SPATTER, WHICH BY NOW WE CAN REASONABLY BEGIN TO ASSIGN TO SOME OF ITS MOST PROMINENT MAKERS SUCH AS KRALIK, RUCKL, WELZ AND TOMSCHICK, ONE BEGINS TO NOTICE THAT, WHILE AT FIRST SIGHT THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE, THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM. ALL OF MY EXAMPLES ARE RUCKL.

1. AN 8" GLOSSY VASE IN RED,WHITE AND BLUE. NOTICE THE RINGS, WHICH HAVE BECOME A RUCKL MARKER. NEXT, A SATIN LAMPSHADE IN ORANGE, WHITE AND BLUE. NOTICE THE "BUBBLY" EFFECT, WHICH ALSO APPEARS IN RUCKL BASKETS. I AM LUCKY TO HAVE BOTH, FOR THEY CLEARLY BELONG TO THE SAME MANUFACTURER. THE SPATTER IS APPLIED TO CLEAR GLASS, AND THEN SUBMITTED TO ACID VAPORS.

2. WHAT I CALL MOSAIC SPATTER, DIRECTLY APPLIED TO THE SURFACE, MADE TO STAND AS NAIL POLISH, VERY LITTLE MELDING OF COLORS. ABOUT 4", WITH THE REMNANT OF AN ACID STAMP MARK.

3. AND LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ORANGE WHEN IT IS MADE INTO SATIN. THESE ARE AMAZING PIECES: A SIX SIDED SHADE WITH A PAPER LABEL, THEN AN 8" VASE WITH THE INVERTED SILVER SEMICIRCLE, AND THEN, LARGE A SIX-SIDED WALL POCKET, UNMARKED.

4. FINALLY, THREE EXAMPLES OF CASED GLOSSY. THE OUTER CLEAR CASING IS CLEARLY VISIBLE, PARTICULARLY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PIECES. SEE THE RINGS ON THE PERFUME? JUST LIKE THE ONES ON THE VASE IN THE SAME PICTURE. THE TALL ONES, BY THE WAY, APPEAR IN 1929, 1930 AND 1932 BB CATALOGS.

JITKA LNENICKOVA, WRITING ON LOETZ TANGO FOR THE VERY FIRST 2002 ISSUE OF THE "JOURNAL OF DECORATIVE ARTS", STATED: "THE POPULARITY OF TANGO GLASS CULMINATED IN THE USA AROUND 1920-1922" (PG. 4). SHE MISSED THE MARK BY 20 TO A 100+ YEARS. TANGO STILL DANCES IN OUR AMERICAN HOMES!

I have a full shelf of tango myself. It looks especially good when it is displayed together, clashing colors next to each other. And I have it on a lower shelf, because the light at the top of the cabinet lights them up 4 shelves down.
