The piece is a heavy bronze piece, The Staunton must refer to the area this was made for, probably Virginia. Possibly for cars that were in parades and such where the town name was a good fit. I have seen the piece before, but always with Buick or Oldsmobile, it is fairly rare I imagine. The motometer seems glued to the piece, but only through being on it for nearly a century. Likely around 1925. Need a photo from the top to show the unique shape of the piece on top.
This style of dogbone was made with a number of varients in the name, usually an automobile make, the most common Buick and Oldsmobile.

From wikipedia:
The Boyce MotoMeter was patented in 1912, and was used in cars to read the temperature of the radiator. From then through the late 1920s, the company manufactured a variety of different models which varied in size. The Moto Meter Company made slight changes to each of its original models and added new designs to their line of meters and discontinued some others. By 1927 the company was offering a wide variety.
Nice item,
Dave
Thanks Dave, I am just not sure about the Staunton dog bone, why it was made etc., but I know there are things you just cannot access in Wikipedia. Phil.
