I am curious about this what appears to be a native North American Southwestern shallow basket. I've heard that this type of basket is being reproduced in Pakistan and wondered if anyone knew of a way to determine or authentic a real one verus a modern reproduction. This one is appx. 14.2 inches round and very nicely made. The back/bottom construction is not as fine as the front. It is a coiled basket. If it is in fact from the American S.W. I wondered in what area it was made and rough idea of date of construction. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have a basket very similar to this from the El Paso Saddleblanket in El Paso, Texas. They are one of the largest dealers of Southwestern style decorum. From the looks of the other items posted, I would say these are all Mexican produced items.

Yeah that was my guess, its a Mexican imitation of a Navajo basket

hmm well, I wouldn't say imitation because Mexican folkart is a legitimate form of indigenous art. Check out the Saddleblanket's website and you'll find the items are hand crafted and often depict stories from Mexican culture. Also, if you ever find yourself in this store, the hand-decorated, Southwestern themed coffins are a must see!
