Anzengruber again! I found this one at this month's Collector's Fair! It comes from the same dealer who had sourced my other two figures. I am amazed at the quality of the finish on these small pieces by the Anzengruber Studio in Vienna. The hair on this one is amazingly detailed. He has a couple of nicks but I could not resist him as a Xmas item.

There is a book available on Anzengruber Der Volkstyp - Anzengruber Keramik Wien by Uta M Matschiner. She calls these young boys “der Volkstyp”: they are a series of young musicians, singers in traditional Austrian dress. There are single figures and sets of three, strolling arm in arm.

I believe this one is meant to be paired with an Anzengruber Xmas tree. I have seen a photo of the pair. The tree is twice as tall as the figure and it makes sense of the pitch of the eyes and head of the figure. He is looking yowards a huge star on top of the tree.

I believe he is a candlestick and has also space for a match? In his right hand. The picture I have seen of the pair of objects has something in his hand.

Leopold Anzengruber was born in Steyr, Austria on 30 March 1912. Interestingly after leaving school he was trained at a young age in Firenze, Italy. He didn't return to Austria until 1942. After World War II, in 1948, he set up Anzengruber-Keramic by taking over the pottery workshop of Gusti Mundt-Amann 49 Boecklin Strasse, Vienna 2. He made a go it and the business flourished. The modelling of a one of the Three Wise Men in a Nativity Scene - a Moor - interested him and he began working on the design of many Negro and African figures, both male and female. They were a hit and soon became iconic images of the mid-century period. In 1958 the company employed 96 people.

      Hi Amber! In constant awe!
I think I am after a tree though!
    9. AmberRose AmberRose, 11 years ago
Of course you are after a tree! But, that doesn't mean you can't have some fun until then. Paolo leaves out a dirty dish...little fella is there to gasp in amazement.
Center piece shot that matches Sean's...little guy is there staring with wide eyed wonder...
Oh, I am such a dork as I could really take this to the next level.

well done again but where do you stick the candle though?from my perspective he doesnt seem sober enough to hold it up straight!
    27. vetraio50 vetraio50, 11 years ago
Many thanks artislove. The spike in the left hand is for the candle. My photos probably exaggerate the angles.
