BEN-HUR A TALE OF THE CHRIST
by WALLACE
New York: Harper & Brothers
This is the link I used to try and identify this book.
http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~rcadams/gallery.html
* Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (New York: Harper & Brothers), 1880.
1st edition, 3rd state [Brown pebbled cloth cover over beveled boards, 6-word dedication, and date dropped from title page (this appeared in 1881) and 3rd state of ads which begins, "The novels in this list...." but begins with Baker's and ends with Yates.] 552 pages + 12 pages of ads. Height of book measures 17.5 cm.
(This is what does not match this book. 6-word dedication is: TO THE WIFE OF MY YOUTH. The 11-word dedication which this one has is: TO THE WIFE OF MY YOUTH WHO STILL ABIDES WITH ME.
See 1st edition, 1st state and click on, "Read more about this fascinating printing history" to find out about the two types of dedication).
The second post is photos of the beginning and ending of the ads.
Thanks for looking,
Dave
