Another beautiful piece inherited from my grandfather. A bilateral postal scales. Not sure of the year, welcome any suggestions.
Markings on the back: OEST.P. 1766; UNG.P. 16742; D.R.P. 112860.121631
According to this site: "the markings above repersent four patents: the Austrian patent (OEST.P. 1766) was granted to the firm Balduin Heller's Söhne from Teplitz in Czechoslovakia. The application was made June 24, 1899, the patent was granted April 1, 1900. The Hungarian patent (UNG.P.16742) was granted to the firm at January 4, of the year 1900. The second German patent (D.R.P. 121631) dates from March 29, 1899 and was also granted to Balduin Heller's Söhne from Teplitz. Therefore the scale is dated to c1900."

Not sure. Is that what you think it is?
I don't think it's a scale. Believe it's a "Gig" for angle cuts(tool) or "pitch" angles on a chain or something along those lines. I really don't know, but that's my impression of this.

Thank you Kerry. I will add that sub category to see.
The base is too elaborate to be a carpentry tool. I think it may be a scale missing the counter balance or assembled wrong.
Should I take another photo at a different angle?
heidinors again -- wonderful post tonight from you by the way -- here my two bit opinion -- i think it is a nautical sextant of some sort used to plot the stars for navigation or mapping -- the numbers appear to be degrees but can't tell for sure -- any other writings or patent numbers on it -- looks like it is missing the telescope -- just another thought or avenue for your research
I will upload another with numbers from the back.
I'll go with scales now, lol.

The writing on the wheel is in fractions. The wheel has some prongs on them and actually seperate with weight.
ok -- were getting closer -- help me out with the wording -- i can read geschutzt -- which just is the german form for what we use as " U.S. patent" -- doesn't refer to a brass manufacture as many sellers erroneously list the item that way -- it might also be a road surveyor -- i think those numbers on the wheel are degrees -- what do you think -- looks like it has two sets and the larger wheel goes upto 40 -- am i correct

It does show "OZ" on the wheel.. on the bottom under the German word it reads "Real Bronce" exact spelling.
The term to search is : bilateral postal scales.
The 'oz' is an abbreviation for ounces.
OEST.P. 1766. Oesterreichisches Patent (= Austrian patent) with number 1766 ...

Vetraio50, thank you so much for the information. 1766 you think is the patent number? I am still looking for more information. I can not find anything with the same base, all are a solid metal.
Vertraio50, the base is a bit different on the link you sent me, is this common for manufactures back then to use different base's? Your link is the only one I found that is close to this.
