These are quite well made. The chimes are baked enamel over brass inlay. This type of chime set has been around for millennia, as I have seen five chimes dug recently from an ancient site (All of the inlay was gone and they were definitely made from bronze). They were the same size and I could make out a lot of the similar symbolism. I believe that they are mystical. Some kind of "Spirit Chime" for "Divining" or contacting spirits or possible used in a Tarot or I Ching fashion. They do not "Chime" by wind~ They have chimed though, seemingly by themselves~ early in the wee hours of the morning, on the shelf beneath the ancient papyrus scroll, of Isis and Osiris, I have hanging above our dresser..
Nevertheless, I really know nothing about them. I am pretty sure they are Chinese. The wood rack is all exquisitely hand carved from an exotic hardwood that is red. The wood wrack is entirely hand hewn and carved. The flat pieces of wood are not cut but Hewn (roughly carved). I have to add another picture which depicts a European design on the ends.
Furthermore, I think that the petroglyph's on the chimes are all very different characters whereas some of are the same contain some kind of spell or mystical meaning.
These do not seem to be a "tourist Item".
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You~

Thank you, I first learnt the word "Chime" in English. In Chinese, we call it"Bell". This set of Chime, is made by very time consuming procedure. The colour is inlayed enamel and then "bake" it. Afterward you need to polish the surface. The set is brand new, usually for souveniour. The real Chime were just as you said made by bronze, usually no inlay, not because of they had gone. The hard wood rack seemed rose wood, but not for sure.
Thank You "raymondfung" Yes; I thing the rack is rosewood as well. What do you think of the idea of them bing "Spirit Chimes"?
Welcome"cerey_runyon". I'm sorry that my English is not good enough. It just my third language. For me, I'm not fully understand the term"Spirit Chimes". But as I know from Chinese History. In ancient period we have a term"Lai" in Cantonese. The music is one of the component of Lai. Chinese believed that music can teach the people to get closer to Lai. And if we follow the regulation of Lai. We will have a peacefully world. In the Confucian period, the China is up side down. Confucian believed that this is because Chinese are losing the spirit of Lai. Only if we recover the Lai, we can keep the China as a peacefully world again. So, simify speaking, Chimes is a musical instrument, music is to educated the people. If the people is being educated, we will have a peacefully world. Hope you understand what I said. Sorry for my poor English.
