I know many collectors that would not buy a damaged piece, and I know the value is probably minimal, but does anyone else buy a damaged piece just because they are especially pretty (and cheap) or an example of an usual pattern? The vase has a big chip on the top but is very striking. The basket is of what I think are the most beautiful colors, but there is a crack where each handle is attached. I guess the real answer is that I already had more enjoyment from them than I paid.

I will sometimes buy a damaged piece if 1) it is so rare that you almost never see intact ones 2) when you do see a perfect example, it is always too expensive and 3) if you just want to have a piece to study. Usually if I buy a cracked or chipped vase, I'll keep an eye out for a perfect one that I can afford, and if I find one and buy it, I'll give up the damaged one to another collector that is going through the same learning and collecting process that I did.

I've done the same with my Czech birds. Although not as vast an area as Czech glass, some pieces you just don't see at any price. I'd rather have one tht is not perfect than not have it at all. Thanks.
