Very bad photos of my beautiful, vintage German composition Nativity set. You must see close-ups to fully appreciate the beauty of the pieces. Part II will be devoted to the donkey, Part III to the ox, Part IV to the sheep, and Part V to the Holy Family.
There is significant damage. Balthazar is missing a hand. (I have it propped up against the crib, as if he had already presented the golden coffin to the Infant Jesus.) Donkey's ears are both damaged, Shepherd's staff is broken, and stick leg Sheep show wear to the composition body-leg join. Still, I find it most reverent and beautiful. St. Joseph and the Shepherd are deeply reverent and tender. St. Joseph is here not portrayed as an 'old, remote man' but as a mature but young, strong, and tender father.
I didn't have any straw, so I arranged grain around the ensemble. "Bethlehem", from the old Hebrew name "bêth lehem", means "house of bread", a fitting birth place for the Eucharistic Savior.
I think that this was likely produced by an artisan or an artisanal family.
A blessed and joyous Christmas to ye!
