KAJ FRANCK FOR FINEL -FINLAND /DATES 1960's
found this beauty at goodwill tonight , was very pleased , love the color and the design .
______________KAJ FRANCK______________
Kaj Franck is, along with Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva, one of the most important and successful Finnish designers. Kaj Franck studied furniture design at the Central School of Industrial Design in Helsinki (Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu) until 1932. In 1933-1934 Kaj Franck illustrated catalogues for the Riihimäki glassworks; in subsequent years he worked as an interior decorator, decorator, and textile designer. In 1939 Kaj Franck was called up to serve in the armed forces. The close contact Kaj Franck had at that time to the socially underprivileged exerted an influence on his thinking that would last a lifetime. From 1945 Kaj Franck worked as an industrial designer. From 1945 until 1973 Kaj Franck was head designer atist at Arabia although he also designed for other firms. In 1946 Kaj Franck designed tableware for the Finnish Social Welfare Association. Iittala mounted a design competition in 1947; Kaj Franck submitted a design and shared first prize with the designer Tapio Wirkkala. Kaj Franck designed porcelain objects for everyday use, eschewing all superfluous decoration. In his view, an object had to be durable, robust, easy to clean, do justice to the materials used, and be indispensable in order to be designated good and beautiful. From 1946 until 1950 Kaj Franck designed pressed glass for Iittala, including the water jugs and drinking glasses in the "Kartio" range. From 1952 Kaj Franck designed the "Kilta" tableware line for Arabia, which was no longer conceived as a traditional service but instead left it up to the purchaser to combine pieces as desired. One of Kaj Franck's last projects was redesigning the "Kilta" line. Kaj Franck's new (1977) "Teema" line comprises nineteen pieces, all of them based entirely on the elementary geometric forms of circle, square, and cone. Thus consistently reducing design to essentials is the clearest reflection of Kaj Franck's idea that "the only possibility for resolving the technical aspects of utilitarian wares consists in being both radical and socially committed.

Thanks Kevin. Here we have ''kringloop'' that's a store to recycle thinks back to new owners. The sales are not for the needy.
bazelmania , yes the goodwills here are awesome . i just found like two days ago as well 3 brand new reidel martini glasses for a $1.99 each
That sounds great.
In our stores it is all filtered out. Nothing good ends up on the shelves, so I never visit any. Waste of effort and petrol.
lol bazelmania :) i hear the best time to go is in the am or lunchtime:)
That makes no difference I'm afraid.
No estate sales here either.
and no estates sales , wow , so what do or how you find your stunning items?
Searching on fleemarkets, auctions and on the http://www.
Best times to do that was in the 80's and 90's.
I started visiting fleemarkets in 1989. Now I wish I'd even known about all the stuff in the 70's, but I was too young than and I had no recources.
thankyou for sharing bazelmania , very interesting:)
Wow Bazel, I use the thrift as a mental break. I would struggle without them!
I wish I was smarter in the 80s. I would just look for clothes. If only I could reach back and thunk me. : ))
I also wish I knew more about Scandinavian glass...heck even two years ago.
Well I suppose we all have to grow and learn.
You're welcome Sean
Sorry Amber, I don't understand your first sentence. I'm sorry, my english is too limited. Please rephrase that for me.
I wish I had today's knowledge 30 years ago !!! I'd really really love to go back in time. Not to make a load of money on it but to make different decisions and not letting things pass by. Does this make any sence?
yes it does:)
Thanks, I hope it does. I'm envious about the way you guys communicate so funny and quickly. I follow it with great pleasure and I understand most of it, but can't join in, and probably shouldn't.
Absolutely!
My first sentence means that I use going to thrifts as a way to relax.
Please join in every time! We will walk you through. Welcome to the gang!
Where are you located?
bazelmania your welcome anytime to join in:)
Thanks Amber. Now I understand.
I will, but I'm no match for you guys (& galls). It's difficult to be funny and witty in a different language. It also takes a lot more time to write and adress comments. You make it look so easy :-)
I'm from Holland.
love Holland:)
I know Sean, thanks. It's not easy, that's what I meant.
Ever been here?? You should... really, all of ya.
We understand but still would love for you to join in.
I will do that Amber, thanks.
Yea! Great Bazel!
Thanks. You're a doll.
I hope Sean won't mind that we misuse his Kaj Franck to post/comment all this here :-)
See you fit in already.
Sean does it to me all the time : ))
i dont mind :)
Haha. So we have a very good reason !!
Jan -- your english is great -- i have spoken with you on the phone and i am amazed how rapidly you can switch your brain from one language to the other -- i so wish i had that ability -- but for me my tongue is typically like my hair "just washed it and can't do a thing with it" -- if i was born in germany or the spainish countries i would be up a creek without a paddle as the tongue absolutely is as stiff as a board and will not make the "curl" sounds etc -- and oh my -- french -- i won't even go there on that one
but i did learn something today -- thanks to you -- kringloops are similar to our goodwills -- but not as good perhaps -- can't wait to pull that one on ted -- "do you want to go to the kringloop today" ha ha ha -- he's going to be scratching his head on that one for awhile -- i get the oneupsman on him na na na na
hugs dear one
autumn

Hi there!
I'm not really hooking into the discussion thread but I just have to put this question here as someone might have an answer:
There was a very nice Finel-series from the 1960ies that slighty reminds of Quistgaard's Kobenstyle-ware, though the Finel-ware was straighter, and the pots were not pileable. Some came with teak handles. These pots were designed by Seppo Mallat. Now the thing is: I can't find any information about this guy, not when he was born, what else he did design, etc.
Do you Bellin know, or does anyone out there know more about Seppo Mallat? I'd be so grateful for reliable sources!
ill do some checking for you!!!! my pleasure!!!! designqvist:)
Great, thanks Bellin!
I forgot to add the link where you can see the pots I am talking about, here it is:
http://designqvist.at/2012/01/these-pots-are-made-for-cooking-vol-1/
OMG , they almost look like Dansk designs as well , im also going to say that these do look like Quistgaard's Kobenstyle-ware
http://hokuou.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
thanks, but I already know this link. I think I've googled every single website where "seppo mallat" appears... B-)
did your try 1stdibs.com
I did right now, this is what the search engine answered:
0 results for "seppo mallat"

To continue, try a more generalized search or check your spelling.
what this guy is hard to find ....
IM STILL LOOKING:)
Iam coming to a dead end myself!!!! sorry I wished I could be of more help!!!!
seppo mallet with an "e" not "a" in mallet ?
nothing at all ! hate that :(
Right!!!!
Hi Sean and designqvist!
I've been looking too and have a suggestion. There is little written about Seppo on the net. There is lots of talk about the misattribution and is probably copied and pasted from an original source.
The earliest I've found so far goes back to 2007 in a blog comment by Nordic Europe Design Addict:
http://hokuou.blogspot.com.au/2007/04/white-casserole-pot-by-seppo-mallat.html
There is an interesting comment there of February 18, 2009 at 2:30 PM on this blog David commented that “FYI: Seppo Mallat died last week.”
On another page I found an attribution to the range of pots and pans as being:
Seppo Mallat, Kaj Franck and Leif Eriksson for an attribution of the Finella series of pots and pans, bowls and plates, Wärtsilä, Järvenpää enamel of 1969.
http://kurssitm1.wikispaces.com/file/view/Muotoilun_historiaa.pdf
(On the trail of Seppo and Leif Eriksson you can add the name of Tuula Pöyhö too!)
I just wanted to test The CW ability to copy Finnish accents.
Another interesting mention of Seppo comes in an article called “Design by Media. The design culture in the Finnish economy in the press. By Toni Ryynänen.
In this article in Finnish Risto Väätänen remembers being hired by Kaj Franck in 1972.
“Arabialla oli helppo siirtyä Wärtsilälle, jossa muotoilijana toimi koulusta tuttu Seppo Mallat. – Koneet kiinnostivat. Metalliteollisuudessa ei muita muotoilijoita Sepon ja minun lisäksi silloin vielä ollut.”
http://www.kuluttajatutkimuskeskus.fi/files/5367/median_mutoilema_ryynanen.pdf
Note here how the Finnish language has Sepon rather than Seppo.
The significance in the remark is probably that Risto Väätänen is probably someone who could give some more information. He is a formidable name in Finnish design.
He moved on from his work with Kaj Franck and got involved in industrial design of heavy metal products with special emphasis on paper mills.
So I suppose my suggestion is to get in contact with Risto Väätänen.
I think designqvist may know how to make contact with him through: http://www.elka.fi/fida/index.php?id=71
It might work as a means for further research!
From pots and pans to the printing press!
thankyou for sharing this link KevinG!!!!!!!! and the information!!!!
You're welcome, Sean!
:):):):):)
Hi again! I was offline to get my regular dose of night's sleep and now see that you guys at the other end of the world have been highly active!
@vetraio50: Thanks for jumping into the discussion! I knew the first 2 links that you found, the one saying Mallat had died in 2009 (...but I never trust a say-so on the Internet without further proof. And so far I haven't found any reliable information about Mallat's birth-and-death dates), and the other link with the neat little booklet, showing Finnish design.
But your latest 2 links were new to me. I tested the FIDA-page in Swedish and English but it seems to hold more information in Finnish actually. And to googletranslate this Finnish text into German gives you a whole lot of surrealistic text about Arabian design... I'll try to get in contact with Risto Väätänän and will keep you updated!
I have done the same and am contacting someone for a possible bio on seppo (sepon) ... Trying to find oot more aboot him :)
Good morning, all! Haven't been checking on CW - too busy right now, but checked the last Kaj Frank entry only, and then became absorbed by this fascinating exchange. You all know so much more than I, so I hope you'll pardon a comment that might be foolish. "Seppo" is a Finnish first name. There are three entries for “Seppo” in the following linked website. See entries “Sebastian”, “Seppo” 1, and “Seppo” 2 below. "Sepon" is not listed as a diminutive or variant. "Sepi" is. "Sepon" might be an inflected form of "Seppo" or “Sepi” -- I don't know. The Finnish language is so highly inflected that it is said that only children and linguistic geniuses can ever learn to speak it. Back to work for me now!, but this evening, I'll be checking back to see what my masterly comrades on CW have achieved on this thread. Bravo to you all!!!!
http://www.behindthename.com/name/sebastian
http://www.behindthename.com/name/seppo-1
http://www.behindthename.com/name/seppo-2
@miKKo ... that's kind of what my thought was in comment #73 ... other spellings or translation of name ..
"Sepon" is in this case the genitive of "Seppo". For those who want to get an impression of the challenge that the Finnish language is for every non-native speaker, scroll down to the "Declension" and click the drop down arrow:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Seppo
Thanks for that wiktionary link designqvist!
I use it often.
Not so much for the Finnish.
I found it interesting too the etymology of Seppo:
- Seppo "smith" or "skilled person"
- seppä (“blacksmith”), an epithet of the smith Ilmarinen in the Kalevala.
I also found an interesting link on Nordic names:
http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Seppo
Translation of that text I put in above is difficult in google translate in Swedish too?
The technology is not yet perfect.
The Finel Arabia becomes Saudi Arabia.
I'm hopeen for some Yooper (Upper Peninsular) Finnish expert to stop by and help us out, ya?
Aye, I might new someone, my friend Hans ....
Sounds promiseen, ya!
For the record ... I love love love the UP ... I saw a documentary on how it came to be part of Michigan ... Goes something like this ...Turns out that the Michigan-Ohio rivalry goes well beyond sports ...To settle a dispute along the river about land needed for shipping purposes between the two states, the US government gave the UP area to Michigan, which ironically because of the decline in manufacturing, has benefited Michigan in the long term ... The UP is a huge destination for all sorts of Recreation/tourism.....
wowza!! beautiful find!
@ Eye4 No. 84: Thanks much for kind comment, Eye! Your knowledge of glass is most impressive - I could never catch up to you. I just thought a bit of a comment on the devilish refinements of the Finnish language might help, and I see that designqvist snared the declension and confirmed the hypothesis. I decided to have a quick look at designqvist's page, and found that she has a dangerously fascinating external webpage. Now I'm enchanted with some striking pots, as well. First, this Kaj Franck bowl comes to seize my soul, now some uncommon pots demand attention too. CW is a dangerous place. But I so enjoyed the encounters, and as usual, I learned so much for you all. Thanks! : )
I hate being so aware that I really know nothing about nothing ... But I keep chiming in, it's my experience in analytical brainstorming ...
OH, NO!!! Comment 91 was intended to read: But I so enjoyed the encounters, and as usual, I learned so much FROM you all - not FOR you all!!! AIEEE!!!! You will always know much more about these things than I, Eye4. : )
I got interested in the area recently by reading a book by Timothy Brook "Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World".
In the book, the author uses the metaphor of Indra's net:
“Buddhism uses a similar image to describe the interconnectedness of all phenomena. It is called Indra's Net. When Indra fashioned the world, he made it as a web, and at every knot in the web is tied a pearl. Everything that exists, or has ever existed, every idea that can be thought about, every datum that is true—every dharma, in the language of Indian philosophy—is a pearl in Indra's net. Not only is every pearl tied to every other pearl by virtue of the web on which they hang, but on the surface of every pearl is reflected every other jewel on the net. Everything that exists in Indra's web implies all else that exists."
http://www.digplanet.com/wiki/Vermeer%27s_Hat:_The_Seventeenth_Century_and_the_Dawn_of_the_Global_World
thankyou ladies AND Gents for sharing im interested in knowing more :) and there is a new posting tonight as well by me , something ive had for a while in the kitchen and had for gotten all about that as well moving and forgetting of what you have!!!!!

Moonstonelover21 for the loves!!!!!
Hi Sean
your bowl the red one here is in a pattern called "Kehrä" by Raija Uosikkinen.
Just came up of the site of Flickr photos on the Opa question.
That led me to this site with an article in Finnish on the Finel topic.
But it is in Finnish!
Are you game?
http://www.hs.fi/asuminen/artikkeli/Hyllytetyt+pannut/HS20070309SI1AM032uh
Finel on tuotemerkki, jota valmisti Järvenpään Emali. Finel-astioiden suunnittelijoita olivat muun muassa Seppo Mallat, Tuula Pöyhö ja Leif Eriksson.
Emaliastioiden koristeiden suunnittelijat ovat heitä tunnetumpia nimiä - muun muassa Arabian taitelijat Raija Uosikkinen ja Esteri Tomula.
The enamel shapes were designed for Finel by Seppo Mallat, Tuula Pöyhö & Leif Eriksson. The design of the patterns on the enamel were by two major designers:
Raija Uosikkinen & Esteri Tomula.
Here the author describes the shapes as being "Järvenpään Emali". Wartsila Oy Järvenpään Emali produced rolled steel sheets enamelled cooking utensils.
That is a good search term these days.
The Japanese really love this stuff!
Check out this site and see the Seppo Mallat attributions!
http://13th-gallery.jugem.jp/?eid=110
The rest is interesting too!
An interesting on the Aesthetic Tyrant!
Marjut Kumela of the Arabia Museum description of Kaj Franck!
http://www.finnguide.fi/sightguide/artdetail.asp?a=543
"One of his most important tasks had been to modernise the design of utility articles at Arabia porcelain factory, Nuutajärvi Glass and Järvenpään Emali (making enamel products); all three were part of the Wärtsilä Concern at that time. Changing the traditional style imitations and colourful decorations into timeless, geometrical basic shapes and clear colour surfaces also required purposeful work on the prevalent attitudes in the production and among the sales personnel and users. Simple shapes and flawless, sleek surfaces are always a challenge for the mass-production. Getting high-quality results could even require a "tyrannical" hold from the artistic manager."
There is another interesting point that is made in the article above about the design called originally "Kilta".
"Franck had always - however tyrannical he was - emphasised the importance of team work in industrial design and suggested therefore 'Tiimi' (The Team) as the name of the renewed set. Finally, it was named 'Teema' (The Theme)."
The point is the team work. It's not just one name it is a team: 'Tiimi' .
Not just Kaj Franck.
Seppo Mallat, Kaj Franck, Leif Eriksson and Raija Uosikkinen.
Good morning (11:30 a.m. over here)! I see there's been happening a lot while I was asleep... looks as if we are a good tiimi, too! I'm sure we'll get hold of this phantom Seppo!
And this thread here starts to become a really interesting interdisciplinary, general educational course. Great fun!!
@miKKo: Thanks for the "dangerously fascinating external webpage"!
Now 9pm here Saturday in Sydney, over to you all!
