    E. Charlton Fortune, "Late Afternoon, Monterey,"
    Oil on Canvas, circa 1920
    Estimate: $100,000 / 200,000
Sold for $210,600 at Michaan's Auctions on December 6, 2010

First and foremost, this was a splendid example of the artist painting a t her best with fresh colors, lively forms, and in her mature impressionist style. One could almost smell the salt air of the Monterey Bay and hear the shouts of the children playing in the late afternoon. Second it was fresh to the market. This piece was mostly purchased shortly after it was painted and placed on a dining room wall of a family home in the San Francisco bay area, not seen by anyone outside family and friends of the owners for the past 80 years. Third, with recent exhibitions and a book about Fortune, the artist's reputation is steadily growing among museums and collectors. Her works are avidly sought after by saving art collectors who recognize that she is still relatively unknown to the larger public and her impressionist landscapes will appreciate in value.

Pop's, maybe to share, and educate. I think that's what this site is about. I think I learned something from this post even if it went over your head.

rocker-sd, I get it I just object to those who try to find ways around the rules, this and EVERY post they have is clearly an Advertisement for their Acution House....I'm all about learning......i just don't want to see this site drug down...Just my take on it I've said my bit..................

Agree with Pops-- this site it to share YOUR COLLECTION not adverstisement for your auction company.

Sorry pops, I don't see any advertisment here. Just the history of a sale. Just because they own a auction house, they should not post? Well for disclosure purpose's I own a 6000 square foot antique shop in Keystone, South Dakota. The Holy Terror Antiques. Should that prevent me from offering my 42 years of knowledge and experience in the Antique trade here?
The only rule I have seen is " keep it on-topic and respectful". I found the post very informative. The whole antique appraisal systems is based on history of prvious sales. I am certain if you found you had a similar painting by the same artist hanging in you dining room you would have a different attitude.

      rocker-sd,
You should take the time to read the rules and "What is appropriate to Post"

This is for folks to post their own collections or individual items. The posting auction house doesn't own the item! If someone had asked about this particular artist, then a post with their knowledge would have been appropriate.

As it was done, I found it inappropriate and self promoting-- just as your latest post with your plug for your antique store.
