This little gem measures 6 1/2 inches tall and is made out of mahogany. I am not sure, but I think it dates to the mid 1800's. It was given to me by a lady who was going to toss it out as she had no use for the "tiny"thing. I am not sure if it is a salesman sample or if it was intended for use by a child.

To my eye it's more of a children's piece.

Ah, I thought maybe mid Victorian era. I did get it when I was helping a friend liquidate her deceased mother in laws doll collection.
A "salesman sample" would exhibit the SAME quality of workmanship as a full sized item-- dovetailed drawers, chamfered bottoms and backs, etc...
Some additional photos of the back and drawers out of the "chest" may help.
The metal on the bottom (feet?) is odd.
In addition to a childs toy, there is the possibility it was made for other uses-- such as to hold jewelry. Again, additional photos may shed some light on its original intended purposes.
