I found this pretty serving spoon today. It has a lot of patina on it. Back of it is stamped Wm Rogers Mfg Co IS . It has a double rose pattern on front. I can't discern if it is silver plated or sterling. Any guesses? Thx

The IS stands for International Silver, which the Rogers company became a part of in 1898.

yes, I agree with amandabuns. Any time you see IS it means silver plated, but that doesn't mean it isn't a nice spoon. Sometimes I have a hard time deciding whether to leave it in the "patina" state, or to polish it. I happen to like that old look.

sorry, "most of the time it means silver plate." Yours is silver plated.

INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO - Meriden, CT

Among the many indipendent companies which became part of The International Silver Company are: Barbour Silver Co, Derby Silver Co, Meriden Britannia Co, Middletown Plate Co, W. I only had a few minutes to look but I believe the name of your pattern is, "Louisiane" if you check the link below closely you will find the pattern. It is a great site for searching sterling and silver plate flatware.

Looks like you can date this spoon to c. 1938.
