This piggy bank was made in Czechoslovakia. I was told by the seller that the 97 was for 1897. I find it interesting that all of the information on the belly is hand-incised. The other marked piggy banks like this I have, the marks are a part of the mold. Cute piggy!

Well I just learned that Czechoslovakia didn't exist until 1918, which means this piggy must post date that. That just blows me away! Stylistically, it seems much earlier.

Yeah, I usually don't. It's still a nice addition to my piggy bank collection!

I wouldn't consider these types of banks art pottery, but I guess cw does?

In the pic, it looks like it has been incised after firing, which is a little suspicious. Does it feel rough around the lettering?

Well I think it is, especially given the difference in color. I didn't find that suspicious, just interesting. It would have taken a while.

They use an engraving machine, which has a pen attached like they use to "hand engrave" silver plate etc.

That's interesting! I assumed it was hand done because of how 'sloppy' the writing looks. Thanks for your insight!

It is still hand done but in that you hold the pen and guide it, so on a very hard, curved surface like clay, it will slip. I'm just guessing that that is what they used.
