The button is cuff sized. I do not believe it is military. Based on the backmark, it might date to the around the Civil War or shortly thereafter. It came from an antique shop in Sandusky, OH. I was wondering if it might be railroad?

I did a quick uneducated google search and I think that you are correct on the backmark (1875 - 1902). I googled scovill mfg co, Image search and found a similar front button with with the OS but missing the large X or H behind it. The button I found also had writing around the letters that read, "Lawrence Indian School". It seems like most of the military button fronts had eagles or sheilds. I also looked at railroads but most of them indicated the specific railroad with a train. Hope some of this info helps.

Thank you crabbykins! I never considered a school uniform button. I shall look more into it.

I came across the button you mentioned, and another one for the GAR and one for the Sons of Veterans. They have similar lettering styles also. So I guess it could be for a fraternal organization too.

Sandusky Transit System, as in Sandusky of Ohio Transit System which is now Sandusky of Ohio, Amtrak.
