Your first guy may be fraternal-- the shoulder insignia looks to have initials at the end, which is not something I have encountered in military rank (US).

Grandfather was a singer as a hobby, he knew Boston singer teachers and did sing in Boston and here in a minstrel show i posted the shot here. Now i will look for mere thanks, Steve
WOW This could be a movie!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a story Jason!!!
Ever time go through a box of Cabinet cards i pick some out, i remembered these 2 names before, so i got them together yesterday. i do have tintypes and others of Carl Preston and his sister as baby's and as they grew up. The problem is we have no others PRESTON here.
This is E Preston as shown Emily Preston, very old print maybe from 1870s, we do other Preston pictures. My Wife's Dad name was Alan Preston Cook and he had a desk saved/called as a Preston Desk, given to the first son, my wife's brother. I do have some 8/10 prints from 1930s when the Preston's came together, they were all tall and over 60 yrs old. The shots were saved but some were out of focus, but have names.
