George M. Hathaway, a native New Englander, is remembered for his intimate views of the northeast coastline. Apparently having spent a great deal of time in Portland, Maine, he interpreted the well-known Portland Head Lighthouse on occasion.
This particular painting is fine specimen of his work. It measures 14''x10'' and is signed in red- which is said to be rare, as Hathaway always signed his paintings in black. The painting depicts Portland harbor with views of local landmark 'bug light' and displays over 7 different sailing vessels.
The art was originally commissioned by a ship's captain- and to our knowledge all sails and riggings of the ships are extremely well done replicas.

G.M.Hathway rented a room on the end of the pier at Jones Landing, Peaks Island Maine for a time and then I am not sure where he went. Does anyone know when he was on the island? Thanks. I am looking to purchase any of his paintings.
