Hello All. This was a pretty neat find. It's a hand warmer from K-Mart. How many are you going to find that cost $.88 ? The sticker price of this new in the box piece, note the sticker is printed on the box, not added on to the packaging. It's all metal and made in Honk Kong for S.S. Kresge Company Troy, Michigan
My guess would be sometime before 1963, as no Zip Code. As I said earlier, this is never been used , with all the trimings, pouch, instrustion card and the box.
Any ideas as to the date?

The first Kmart opened in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan. - Prior to that the stores were called S.S. Kresge named for the founder.

Thank You Tony for the love and info, this might be some of their first run items, as no zip code on address and low "stock #"

LOL - the 88 cent price sort of gives it away too. - Is this a zippo lighter size or the larger one? I had a jon-e-warmer which was called the Giant and it had the patent dates (1963,1965,1969) and the manufacture date (1973) stamped on the bottom.
  6. kerry10456 kerry10456, 4 months ago
It's about the size of a cigarette pack or deck of playing cards, nothing stamped on it other than Hong Kong.
  7. mustangtony mustangtony, 4 months ago
OK, thats the big size. They did make a smaller one the size of a zippo, maybe for the little campers with little hands. Nice you have the original packaging.

If it wasn't same as new, I'd be tempted to use it, -20 degree wind chill here today, colder tomorrow, burrrrrrrrr

I had one of those probably in the early 60's but don't think it was Kmart & it was larger than what I'm reading here + came in a velvet like pouch with a draw-string. Kmart doesn't exist anymore? Guess I've been gone longer than I thought! Well it has been 42-43 yrs since I lived on "Uncle Sambo's Plantation". Next thing I know, you people are going to tell me there are no more Wikles Drug stores with a soda fountain!

Lucas, I worked at a Rexall soda fountain, back in the day, pretty sure there all gone now. :-(. Thanks for stopping in and sharing some humor, always appreciated!!

There's still some Kmart stores, but owned by Sears now.
  12. mustangtony mustangtony, 4 months ago
blunder - Kmart actually owns Sears Roebuck & Company now. There were several brands made, Sears had a 1961 patent on it too - so did jon-e-warmer.
pw-collector has 2 different ones posted on his board. I never posted mine, just sold it 2 days ago.

After I made that post, I looked up the history of Kmart & the 1st store was in 1962. I left the States in '73 ("Love it or Leave it"). I remember them while visiting but didn't grow-up with them. I am more familiar with shopping at Simpson-Sears in Canada but thought they also went tits-up some years back. Maybe I should plan an extended "vacation" to the States & see what has been going on. I'll have to get my Eastern Airlines return ticket updated first.

Awesome with the box. Here are the two I have. New with instructions, but no box.
I would agree with the early 60's.

AR8 - I believe the cigarette circle opening is only on one side, the other side may match the box picture. My jon-e warmer only had the cigarette opening on one side and the other was with a different hole pattern.

Kevin, Tony is correct, the star is on the other face.
Thanks Dave and Michael for showing the love.
Thanks everybody for all the input, very appreciated!!

I bought one of these Christmas 1965 for my dad at J.M. Fields department store, which was like our Walmarts today. Mom gave each of us three kids ten dollars for all our Christmas shopping. This was dad's present. Ten dollars went a long way back then.

I remember when I worked for Employment Insurance ( we never liked Unemployment office so they changed word to Empl. ) we had/have a duffle bag in trunk or back of SUV with parka and all things needed if you got stuck on the road. We had the newer hand warmers but this is techno/ trekkie /stone age !! I love it, bring out the phasor stun guns, Kerry!!~
