Have just purchased this from e-bay and I am hoping that it is a genuine Fairy Lamp - does it look right? Are there supposed to be two ground out pieces either side of the chimney? I am guessing it would enable to candle to burn by letting air to the bottom of it! I would appreciate any comments on it - I am hoping that it has some age and I have not bought something from china!!!! Many thanks!!

Hi in Truitt's Bohemian Glass 1880- 1940 page 68 there is an very similar example .Hartmann & Dieterichs , I think they were refiners??
They located near Novy Bor (Haida) so a manufacturer from there assumed.

The answer to narrowing down a maker is the shade ribbing and the available decors in my opinion. The swirl ribs and shape are repeated in a few examples below.

See U-426, U-449, and U-500 on that page. I feel these are related to yours according to the ribs on the shades & drip cups.

Hartmann & Dieterichs had a large cutting /etching shop and they painted glass per the Truit book. It doesn't necessarily say they manufactured glass. The Truitt 1 example is smooth in nature and similar enough to be the same maker. The drip cup is slightly different and it's hand painted but it's the same shape otherwise.

Hi Charcoal, you are correct I don't think they made it but would have sourced their blanks from nearby so I made the assumption that the Maker was from Novy Bor .
Interesting description of that piece:
"We attribute this tall blown applied glass candle holder or fairy lamp base to the Bohemian firm of Hartmann and Dieterichs ca. 1900 - 1910. It is not John Walsh Walsh as the yellow is wrong, and the lack of a British pontil scar with the ground upper rim all indicate Bohemian. Also this is uranium oxide free and has an abundance of the bright orange enamel that adorns so many of the regional glass pieces. "
That was a great example you found there Justanovice! In my recent study of fairy lamps I has seen a few similar lamp bases but none of them were complete with the shade like yours. After studying your posting I believe your lamp was manufactured by Ruckl. This will hopefully be better confirmed as similar shapes and decors are found, but that is where I would look first.
Thank you so much charcoal for your interest and advice!! I think I was very very lucky to stumble across it in the wrong category!!! I did not paid an awful lot for it! I am now beginning to realise that I have also be fortunate enough to have a complete Fairy Lamp - I have to say I am delighted with it! I may even start collecting down this route. I knew about them as I have two Victorian Christmas tree candle holders and one small fairy lamp so had looked at them in the past. Will now look at Ruckl, so thanks again!: )
No problem Justanovice. Thanks for sharing your example and for the great discussion. I love fairy lamps! The shade is of course the hard part to find. I would ever use it with lit candles because the heat may cause a crack as you likely already know.
I would also say that the holes at the bottom of the shade were to let in air. We have a similar sized fairy lamp base with a hole at the very bottom but no shade to compare. At least now I have a clue as to what the 3/8" hole is for. :)
I had only recently read about the heat from our modern candles being hotter than those used when these Fairy Lamps were in use, but I do thank you for reminding me of that problem. It is something that one may do just to see what it looks like!
