I was delighted to receive this gorgeous vintage Fenton carnival glass tumbler in the mail recently! ‘Butterfly and Berry’, sent to me by the Muse of Spring we know as AmberRose! When it arrived, I immediately opened the package and celebrated both most kind Sender and glass. I lingered over the most gracious notecard that accompanied this treasure. Thank you, oh Muse AmberRose!!! I loved the greeting, and loved the tumbler!!! God bless you!!!
Paneled tumbler is a bright golden orange, with iridescent green and raspberry patches of ‘lustres’ that ‘travel’ as the light plays upon the glass. This is a heavy and solid piece, 4 and 1/4 inches high and 2 and 3/4 inches wide. Often found with a matching pitcher in “water set”.
When this tumbler was designed, circa 1911-1915, water was not as much taken for granted. There was no air conditioning in those days, and water often came from a well. While it would not have been a scarce resource for most persons able to afford this glass, it was a very welcome refreshment, and presenting it in such a beautiful glass would have been a grace note that a lady of taste would have been proud to offer to her guests. It is also the perfect size for table. Tumbler feels pleasantly heavy in hands, and holds a generous volume.
I don’t know exactly when this tumbler was issued, but I do note that it was made in the ‘pre-logo’ period. It is in very fine condition, with only a few miniscule fleabites on periphery of base. AmberRose remarked upon them, but I would not consider them faults, but rather as ‘beauty marks’. I am thrilled with your most gracious harbinger of Spring! Thank you, thank you, AmberRose!!!
Follows a link to the poem that Muse enclosed, an excerpt from “Summer Song” by Sarah F. Davis. It is the fifth passage up from the bottom of the page, and it begins with the line: “Starred forget-me-nots smile sweetly.”
