Rene Lalique was a cunning salesman. He realised in the early 1920s that one great and largely untapped retail market was 'boudoir trinkets' that very rich gentleman could buy for their lady friends; wife’s, mistresses and more likely - prospective ones. I think the logic was if you gave a lady something she would keep in her boudoir/dressing room then you were halfway there yourself.

But then there was an extra twist, the gentleman may have bought these beauties, believing they were for pins and other bits and bobs, but the lady knew what there were really for; something done in private that in those days no true ‘Lady’ would be seen doing in public; Smoking!

Rene Lalique did a wide range of these pintrays, the most significant being the little animals done in a stunning variety of colours

    We have here

    1. A very rare blue rapace (owl) designed 1931
    2. A yellow duckling designed 1925
    3. A topaz (reddy brown) temple dog designed 1926
    4. An opal turkey designed 1925

    More to come.......
