found these stunners at goodwill today for $2.99 each , it was just amazing to find something like this important of post modern art at goodwill , this were well taken care of and a true piece of class. these are solid silverplated and very very very heavy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rejecting the Modernist ideals of design dictated by function, Postmodernist designers experimented with color and surface pattern, historical and cultural references. Swid Powell were one of the first companies to embrace this movement in terms of tableware.

Founded in New York in 1983 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell, Swid Powell produced works by many of the major Postmodern designers, including Michael Graves, Ettore Sottsass, Zaha Hadid and Robert Venturi, who designed ‘Grandmother’ (shown left): one of Swid Powell’s most desirable patterns.

The ‘Grandmother’ pattern was an ironic re-imagining of a grandmotherly chintzy tablecloth, updated with black lines and stylisation. As well as embodying Postmodernist principals of color and history, the pattern was a product of Venturi’s conviction that although the style of our immediate past (mother’s style) seems in bad taste, the buffer of a generation can make our grandmother’s style appealing.

Aimed at the growing number of style conscious ‘yuppies’ in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Swid Powell wares were extremely high quality with fine Transfer printing and were often expensive. They influenced other lower quality wares, so look out for the facsimile signature of the designer under the company name and pattern name on the back of your piece,

Though the Postmodern style has great importance to 20th century design, it has yet to come to the attention of large numbers of collectors and the market for Swid Powell wares is still emerging. Look out for examples in good condition as many were worn or damaged through use. Prices currently range from as little as $10 (£5) up to over $300 (£150) depending on where and what you're buying, and the rarity and condition of the piece.
