I recently received a most remarkable and gorgeous gift from our friend Inky, and have been struggling with posting it. The pieces are fine and small, and I needed to scan them to reveal their glory. However, I have failed at manipulating the scanned pages, and so today I resorted to photographs. While photographing, I fell off the ladder, so no more photos tonight.
This is a glorious tribute of a pious woman in 1920's (and thereabouts) New Zealand. She assembled these devotional aids. I am enchanted by this testimony of her deep faith in God and her devotion to her friends.
These holy cards, Mass cards, and the homemade bookmark with very fine calligraphic flourishes move me deeply. I particularly love the bookmark and the Saint Agnes image, which is superb! (One very seldom sees images on holy cards as fine as this one!) Abiding grace.
I don't know the exact date range for these items, but I do see Masses for the Dead, and other prayer cards with personal notes – marking passages and sacraments. These items were found in a book. I speculate that the woman kept these in her Missal or prayer book. The edges of some of the items look just like those of cards I carry in my Liturgy of the Hours.
I will be tinkering with these images over the next few days....

Hi mikko... the Saint Agnes bookmark was my favourite as well for obvious reasons..:-).. and I think that you have done a wonderful!! job with what I know hasn't been easy for you. You have showed them really well!..but! I am a little worried that you are doing it at the risk to yourself so take care please!..... I can't think of a better home for these to be in, I knew you would love them....:-)
Hi, inky! Many, many thanks for your very gracious words and gift!!! I LOVE THESE! As soon as I can manage the ladder, I will post the remainder. Thank you very much for your very gracious courtesy. It has taken me too long to post these. RE St. Agnes card, I marvel and am moved by the tender expression on the lamb's face. It is unique in my experience. Magnificent! But I keep looking for the owl you told me about? I can't find him. We'll see if the camera lens can spot him. God bless you! miKKo : D
